I bought this dvd just for the sound effects. As far as great story and acting go, it's not even close to Das Boot. Now that's a film.

Is there an early version of the DVD that had DTS issues? I borrowed it from my father-in-law and it won't play the DTS version. Even if selected, it shows up as Dolby. While the Dolby sound is good, I've heard harder hitting LFE. Maybe see if I can catch it on sale and buy my own copy :)

A lot of people compare this to Das Boot, and its not really fair because Das Boot was a film perfectly engineered as a WWII submarine U boat piece of cinema studying that time frame -- U571 is a joke in that regard, in direct comparison; but the film moves a brisk pace and never outstays its welcome, and the effects and sound mix are simply breathtaking. You do watch Das Boot more for the story, though, yes. There is an odd approach Mostow takes to the material in U571, as if its all there for eye candy with no historical backup whatsoever.

DJ Scotty,

U-571 has to be compared to something and Das Boot is a logical movie to compare it to because they both share the same WWII theme--allied forces fighting the Germans. Would you compare U-571 to, say, The Hunt For Red October? Probably not.

There is something else also. Although I love the loud, deep explosions in U-571, I find the special effects too artificial and I don't get the feeling of being there. Das Boot, on the other hand, captivates me and puts me in the middle of the action with its detailed portrait of life in a submarine at war. Now don't get me wrong. The special effects in U-571 are great and anyone who wants to experience deep, chest-pounding bass should consider buying the dvd.

No I wouldnt compare it to Hunt For Red October and Das Boot is probably the one to obviously compare it to because of the subject matter, but the truth is, Das Boot is just so much better of a film for FILM itself and character study, that it almost makes it unfair -- sure, on the surface, they are World War II U boat studies, yes.

The special effects on U571's DTS track are indeed overcooked; I did an interview with Jon Mostow for Home Theater Magazine and he explained all the details that went into that mix. They are overwhelming, loud and at times artificial sounding....but there are quieter atmospheric cues such as the water coming off the pipes that creak into your surrounds and make a very realistic experience as well.

I thought it was a fair movie too... I bought it quite cheap and watched it once... which pretty much paid for itself... now if I have the urge to hear some depth charges go off again, I can pop it in... but it was worth the $5-7.50 I spent on it... Not an amazing film sure.... but it's ok.
