Wow, this is way out of hand. I was just looking on eBay. There are some people that have a buy it now price for the base/premium system (not core system) for 3,500.00 US dollars. Granted there is no way he will get that. But almost all that are being bid on are almost up to 1,000.00 For a stupid game console.
I mean if it is just rich people buying this crap for their kids - I would tell my kid 'to bad, wait a month for prices to come to a sane level'.
I know its a lot because of Christmas - But I would still tell my child. We will get it after X-mas, and go ahead and cry you lungs out.
I mean the MSRP on the base system is 399.00 and on the core system is 299.00
I think for 1,000.00+ dollars - I would much prefer another computer system.
That I can continue to update with larger drives, faster processors, better graphics, etc....
That would blow away ANY game console.......................................
Or even better I can get that 7 channel amp that I have been wanting.;)
EDIT:: Here is what I am talking about.
Granted this guy includes 17 games. But at $6,000.00 U.S. is just insane............

(Clearly a lot of these are not legit, the one with 17 games looks to be legit)
Here is one for $10,360.00 with 4 games - http://cgi.ebay.com/XBOX-360-Platinum-Console-4-HOT-Games-Ready-to-Ship_W0QQitemZ8239545651QQcategoryZ62054QQtcZphoto QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Here the person tries to sell their car and body in 2 seperate auctions.
1 - http://cgi.ebay.com/Sealed-Xbox-360-Hard-To-Find-MAKE-ME-YOUR-SLAVE_W0QQitemZ8239649035QQcategoryZ62054QQtcZphot oQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Surely after eBay checks some of these - my links may not work - because some will become invalid auctions.

I think the xbox 360 is the closest thing to "the hot item" to have this Christmas. I haven't seen or heard about people going crazy over any other item(s) this holiday season.
That being said, these sellers are smart in my opinion. They know that there are people out there that won't hesitate to rack up more debt on one of their credit cards. Or maybe they'll get lucky with some poor impulse buyer that comes along. Or some poor sucker who needs to try and buy their son or daughter's love will snatch it up. Or whatever other scenario you can think of.
Start the bid at a ridiculous price. Maybe you'll get lucky and make a huge profit. If not, you get to re-list for free, so then you drop down the price a little. Very smart if you ask me.
I've been kicking myself for not getting on a preorder list for a 360. I had a feeling that these things were going to be hot items for Christmas. I don't want one myself, but I sure wouldn't have minded selling one and making an absurd profit.

I agree about the sellers. Trust me, if I would have been on preorder - got one - used it - saw these stupid prices - I would repackage, and sell - surely a dumbbott will come by and give me 700.00 for an opened one.
My main thing - is the morons that would pay these prices.
There are much better ways to show a child love.
I mean heck, in 2 months you could buy the child 3 of these for that price.........

Don't say that too loud, I might just have you virtually build my next strickly gaming rig at the tune of oh......$1200. That's of course without monitor, keyboard/mouse and speakers.
My laptop's graphics card and Battlefield 2 aren't getting along very well.

$1200.
Why 1200. You can build a great computer that will play any game on this planet for half that.
Heck, I saw a ok computer at Best Buy for 399.00 without any rebates.
Something like 3.2Ghz CPU, 80Gb HDD, 512Mb DDR PC3200, 15" LCD monitor, etc.. but with crappy video.
So I would say just throw a decent gaming card in and be done......
That is unless you want serious power, and no proprietary crap. Then that would be a different story.
Then you start from ground up - for reliability and upgradability......

I'm looking at something from the ground up, absolutely want nothing proprietary, like this dell laptop I dealing with. 256mb video card, 2gigs of memory, fast HD, good power supply and cooling. A nice case wouldn't be bad either.:D I figure I could get that for about 1200 give or take.

Just out of curiousity and to see if it can be done, here is a list a got off Tigerdirect. A little more than I would want to spend but I know I can get most of it cheaper off Newegg.

The list comes up as nothing in your cart.
Anyhow, Newegg is not always the cheapest to get parts.
Usually unless they have a sale, they are about average on prices.
If you plan on doing it yourself - here is a good place to start http://www.pricewatch.com/
Also this place is great - But you must keep an eye on it. http://www.techbargains.com/index.cfm

I have 2 DVD burners now, don't really need a third. What Crossfire would you recommend?
I'm not set on DDR2, just know that the DDR2 latencies are coming down.

Thats exactly what I do, I'm trying to get my nephew to see the light but he insist it's just plain easier with the ps2's and xbox's.
First, I have to agree with your nephew, it really is easier to KNOW that a game will work when you put it in your game system, no worries about what video card, how much RAM, soundcard etc. I used to try to play games on my computer and it seemed sometimes it was too fast, sometimes too slow, it was always something.
On the other hand, I already explained to my son that he will have to "make due" with his 2 X Boxes wirelessly system linked, 2 playstations, gamecube, PSP, Nintendo DS and Nintendo Gameboy SP plus his huge library of games because I'm not paying $400 bucks for a system without all the bugs worked out plus an additional $60 bucks a pop for new games. We can use that money to buy plenty of used games we don't have and wait til the Xbox 360 is perfected, drops in price, and has used games on the market.

Now let this be a leason to all of you:
1. The day pre-paying for a SONY PS3 is allowed, go to the nearest store and pay for three systems in full
2. There will be a shortage. There has been an artifical shortage of almost every game system, and every SONY game system ever made
3. Collect your systems. Since pre-pays will get them first
4. Sell them on ebay for a minimum of 200% markup
5. Sleep soundly on your new bed of money.

Ok thank westcott for showing this.....
Now, I would say all those dumbotts that are paying 1,100.00+ for these units are in for a treat.
It would be most certain Microsoft would not reimburse them on their total amount purchase off of eBay.
However they may get a replaced unit.
But then, they will sue for mental anguish that it caused their child (yeah, right)
Oh, and I mean yeah right on the part that their child suffered, and or that it was a purchase for themselves.
Just thought I would share this report from Reuters.

The is a retarded lawsuit filed by someone who just wants some free money, trying to cash in on the misfortune of others. It disgusts me.
Me and 3 friends have had our X360's working perfect since day one! My buddy who is a manager at Future Shop here told me that not one unit they sold has been repoted as defective. If you go over to the AVS forum you will see a poll on which people have a defective unit. There are like 150 with no problems compared to 11-12 with problems and that's on the internet, a place where people with problems tend to go to find others with problems and see what can be done or how widespread it is.
This is normal with any new console launch, I had my first and second PS2 both die on me within weeks.
You have to expect when a million units get sold in a day you are going to hear about 1000 or so breaking. I mean come on, it's an electronic and game systems are not the only things that have broken during there infant period.
Hell that why the name "infant period" was invented for electronics. While I do feel bad for those with a defective unit, I dont think the product is defective what so ever.
just ranting here because I ahte it when people sue for no reason at all.
