Subwoofer upgrade

I am looking to upgrade my current subwoofer (velodyne CHT12) to a subwoofer in the price range of $1,000 to $1,200 that will shake the house during movies but will also sound good with playing music. The subwoofers that I'm looking at are Axiom's EP500, Velodynes SPL-1200R, and SVS PB 12-Plus/2 subwoofer. Does anyone have experience listening to these subs. I've read reviews about each of them saying that they are good. I just would like to hear some other opinions since it is a big purchase. Are there other ones that I should consider also.

Personally I just love the Boston Acoustics PV1000 it is right in the price range you requested. I have a Denon 2106 and sprung for the upper end Sub and it just rocks my house.

from what ive heard, velodyne makes great subs, but at a much higher price than you can get from svs and axiom, since they are facotry direct.

im thinking of buying the same subs.. the ep500 and plus, or plus/2.
im leaning towards the ep500.

Hsu will shortly be releasing their VTF-HO (High Output) Turbocharged sub for a grand. $900 without the turbocharging. 100 bucks less if you pre-order.

I have heard the 1200R and it is a very nice subwoofer. It won't have the shake your house bass that the other subwoofers will though. It has room correction so its a great music subwoofer, but I would elect the SVS for your needs.

Sheep has the right of it . . . the SPL1200R is a nice sub with some truly nice features (remote, on-the-fly presets for different listening situations, monster amp), but I felt that the Hsu VTF 3.2 had more "ba-boom". Velo puts a priority on keeping box size small to appeal to the masses, which hurts them on raw output. Yes, they make up some ground by compensating with more power (1000w+ amps), but they SPL series still doesn't have massive "shake potential". The SPL is, however, incredibly musical to my ear . . . I just couldn't justify almost twice the price of a Hsu VTF 3.2 for it.

For alot less money keep in mind the Velodyne DLS 5000-R....I have one and without a doubt it will shake your house.

I was looking at the same subs as you, and went with the EP500. I should receive it by the end of the week. The SVS was a little too big for my room, and although I loved the sound of the Velodyne, I wanted more impact. From what I read, I will get that with the Axiom. I will let you know after the weekend if you can wait that long.

Btw, Craig over on the Axiom forum just set up the EP500 over this past weekend, and he has extensive sub experience. You may want to check there once he does a longer review. He has tons of SVS, HSU and Velodyne experience.

Not a problem, I will let you know once it is up and running. I am pretty excited. I just put the P1000 up on eBay this morning. I have had pretty good luck selling there. Any other ideas? I was thinking of keeping it, but at this time, I think I will sell it and put the funds towards some more music and movies.

I don't know if you've purchased a sub yet or not. The SVS is by far the best sub for solid, clean good bass. Not boomy in any way. In fact the SVS will out perform the other subs hands down.
If you have purchased a sub other then the SVS already, you can purchase the SVS and compare. I would say it is safe to say you would be bringing the other sub back. Of just save yourself some time and get the SVS PB 12-Plus/2

It's a beast.

I have not purchased a sub yet. My theater room is still being built so I have time to check things out. I know that axiom allows for you to test their products for a month. It is a lot of money which requires a lot of research. So you have heard the Axiom and the SVS sub and you are saying that the SVS sub is the better choice for the about the same price. They both have the money back guarantee. Does anyone know how the two compare. It seems like their have been reviews done, but has their been a comparision battle between the two. It would be nice to test them both out at the same time. Have you found it to be a hassle though to ship subs back and how much would shipping be. Most places won't pay for the shipping. How much does shipping usually cost.

Wow, the HO looks, soo, Air-intake-ish. Good thing it has a title, I almost bought one for my car! heyoooo.

So how does the, um, doo-dad work, extends the ports?

I don't know exactly how it works, but it does attach to the existing ports in a "U" config, extending them, which apparently adds to the output; not sure but I think it helps the extension a bit as well.

I think extending the ports tunes the enclosure lower, but don't quote me on it.

That's what I thought too, but they do call it the "High Output" (HO) option, so...
