Two ins, but only one out!

I picked up a cheepo-o 8" sub and now think it sounds crappy (wonder why)
But my question is...
the guy at best buy said to simply run a single audio RCA cable from Reciever to the white RCA connection on the SUB.
said something about them using the red/white to cut mfg cost and that the red does not work...
but I've hooded the single line RCA to both and they both produce bass...
So I feel I'm not setup properly in that I should go get a cable that runs one rca out of reveiver to two inputs on the sub...
Anyhelp?

If the sub doesn't turn off when you are watching movies or listening to music, there's no need to use both inputs because some subs need a certain level of voltage to remain on. If it bugs you, use a Y female to 2 male splitter, but the end result is basically the same because the signal is recombined inside the sub and both inputs are receiving the same mono signal already. There are two inputs because the sub can be used with a full range stereo.
