Batman Begins Widescreen DVD Review

This movie is quite different from its predecessors. It takes on a much darker, much more serious side to the tale of Batman. Batman Begins explains Batman’s origins by highlighting his fears, his training, and his ideologies. The film details the reasoning behind Bruce Wayne's great responsibility to protect the innocent from those who have made Gotham a city of fear. Read on to find what John Hopkins thought about this DVD.

I bought this movie the second it came out.

Probly the best Batman to date. All the other ones seemed like a guy in a suite dancing around. This one is Dark, and to the point.

The lack of features suprised me though, was hoping for some cool info.

Good thing there will be more, oops, did I just spoil it?

I was pretty dissapointed there was not DTS. Great movie but that could have really brought the action scenes alive. I really enjoyed it and can't wait for the next one.

I was in hopes, also, tho I was pretty impressed (and surprised) at the depth & space of this Dolby 5.1 print.

I bother with very few x-tras, so the single disc Feature & trailer-only release was satisfying for me.
Nothing on disc-2 of the $25 pack, to interest me, that wasn't shown on TV and IMO worth a 2nd look. :)

I just saw this the first time this week (Netflix) and was very impressed with the movie. Best Batman yet, dark without all the creepy sexual inuendo the previous versions seemed to have.

What struck me as interesting was how much this movie reminded me of the the movie "The Shadow."

I was suprised they made the scary parts as scary as they did. It has more spill-your-popcorn moments than most horror films from the last 10 years.

I certainly wouldn't want to be responsible for a 7 year old in the theater when Scarecrow first makes an appearance.

Anywho.....

Movie: Excellant
Video: Very Good (I'm waiting for the HD version before I buy)
Audio: Very Good
Extras: None. Which is OK, I never watch them anymore. (Seen one, seen em all)

I am a huge fan of the Batman character as created by Frank Miller. His graphic novel "Batman Year One" was used as source material for this film.

I have to say I really enjoyed the movie, although Katie Holme's character was sort of a waste of space. I know they have to have a female lead to capture more of the market, but her only contribution of note to the film was in the recognition that Batman is not a mask for Bruce Wayne. (It is the other way around-Bruse Wayne is a mask for Batman.) That point could have been scripted for Alfred, who was well cast and well acted.

Good movie, well deserving of a place in your library next to The Matrix and Gladiator.

I rented this one because I was unsure about it, but I will be picking it up for sure now. Very well done. Well placed surround in many scenes, good bass, and I really liked the way it was done overall. The story was true to the character and was effective, IMO (I could have done without Katie Holmes as well).

What do you expect from the director of Memento? :D

One thing that I really liked was the soundtrack, especailly the beginning, the drum sequence, aww man, raises the hair on the neck.

I was confused by her character, as was my son.

Was she his sister? That's what it seemed like (yet the comic Batman never had a sister).

Then we were really confused when they kissed at the end! That wasn't a brother/sister kiss.

"Created specifically for the movie Batman Begins, Dawes is the childhood friend of Bruce Wayne. Upon Wayne's return to Gotham, Dawes attempts to rekindle the romance, but discovers the man she once loved is not the man who returned to Gotham City."

Rumor has it that she is not returning for the sequel.

She appeared to be the daughter of one of the servants. As mentioned before, she was only put in there to have a female presence opposite the main character at some points.

As far as the movie goes i really liked it...i like it when they actually stay true to the comic book as i believe this one did.
As for the review, i too noticed the same thing about the audio quality very deep bass at times which was real nice on my scII.....but i a,m confused about the video review...especially since the dvd player used was a Pioneer 563a...that is a terrible dvd player for video reviews.........allthough, i do agree with the video assesment in some areas.....

Im not sure i agree or totally understand your point here. Batman is the ONLY super hero with no super hero powers. Becuase of that he doesnt have to become someone else to hid them i.e. super man becomes clark kent, where Batman IS Bruce Wayne. So I do not agree thet "Bruce Wayne is a mask for Batman", that is not the case.

Am i wrong?

Batman is the ONLY super hero with no super hero powers.
Well maybe the only super-big budget movie guy with no powers, but lets not forget (I'll limit myself to superheros with semi-recent DVD releases).

The Punisher
Orgazmo
Wong, Fei Hung (the chinese version of Robin Hood based on a real 19th century doctor/martial artis, there are over 200 movies with his character).
The Mystery Men (Mr.Furious, The Blue Raja, The Bowler, The Shoveler, etc)
Buckaroo Banzai
Blankman
Conan

Was Buckaroo Banzai a comic hero? I only remember the film.

And to a degree, Captain America had no superpowers other than having been given the "super soldier" serum which just enhanced his strength. Yet compared to other "super" heroes he was still just an ordinary man.

Doc Savage had no super powers either.

Batman Begins

Rented it last night. This is the kind of movie that makes all of the time and expense of my HT project worthwhile. IMHO it is the best Batman movie by a mile. Really two movies in one. It starts with the Batman begins story and then ends with a fun and very good Batman film. Great CG and sets, the best Batmobile and some really good actors having fun with a good script. The fiancé did not want to see this film but ended up loving it. I will be purchasing this DVD.

The surround mix is poor...

At least on my copy. The front sounds great, but the surround effects are extremely weak, you could barely hear the bats flying around. (yes, my speakers are level matched :) )

But Wow! it really was a good movie.

I thought the best use of surround was when he had inhaled the halucinogen in the temple and you could hear Liam Neeson's voice throughout the room. The bat scene was pretty balanced on my system, so that doesn't sound quite right.
