Sort of in the vein of the other thread "Movie moments that scared the bejeesus out of you" I was wondering what Horror movies everyone would recommend for this month of October?
Can be a classic or recent.

Well, its not a horror movie, but Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas, has got to be my absolute favorite Halloween movie.

Newer: The Ring, Final Destination, The Cube, Scream, Mimic
Older: Poltergeist, Jaws, Alien, Night of the Living Dead (great but not that scary), Psycho, The Hitcher
Off the top of my head.

The new "prequel" one is weird, but more sickening than scary. The original Exorcist, especially the recently released "The Version You Haven't Seen" is one of my favorite scary flicks. Poltergeist is another. Nightmare Before Christmas is definitely up at the top of my list for Halloween, as is The Crow (Halloween was their wedding night). Of course, Se7en (SE DTS-ES is a must have).
The Omen. The Grudge is fun; it has it's moments. Return of the Living Dead. The Ring 2 was decent if you've seen the first one, if not, rent them both together :) Tim Burton's Sleepy Hollow is cool, visually impressive. From Hell - Jack the Ripper story. Frailty.
Cool surround: The Haunting DTS-ES, Darkness Falls.
We started off the month by watching the original Alien, which will be followed by the rest of them throughout the month. :)

Totally agree with the Exorcist, The Crow, The Grudge, and Se7en. Kinda agree with Frailty (just OK in my opinion).
Oh yeah, add Shawn of the Dead (not very scary but very cool), 28 days later, and Idle Hands while we are straying from pure horror/thrillers.

I'd put Frailty in the same group as Grudge and Ring. Entertaining, but not great. There's a LOT of movies like that. Might add the new Amityville, White Noise and Boogeyman in that category too. I liked Boogeyman, but it seemed to run out of steam after a decent start.
Shawn of the Dead was a lot of fun too. http://forums.audioholics.com/forums/images/icons/icon14.gif. You can add all of the "of the dead" movies in there if you like :) The most recent one, Land of the Dead was crap, IMO though.
Reanimator :D American Werewolf in London, The Howling, Cat People. If you pick up Van Helsing Special Edition, it has a bonus disc with some of the good old original horror flicks on there.
Maybe Evil Dead and Evil Dead 2 (not sure if Army of Darkness fits too, but I liked it :) ).

You recommended Cube??!! I've lost all respect for you.
You have lost the privilege to recommend any more movies!! :D

I've always liked Pumpkinhead.

You're talking about the one with Angelina Jolie? Aside from Angelina and some decent sound, that movie didn't have anything memorable.
Pumpkinhead was a B movie at best, but I liked that one too :o
How could I forget Hellraiser (first one)?
I didn't think Pet Cemetary was that scary, but I really liked it. Which reminds me of...The Shining! The original is great, but the new made for TV one is half decent too.

American Werewolf in London was sweet. Good catch. Though not really as scary as cool. Original Halloween - also good catch.
Frankly, I have a pretty high tolerance for bad horror as its one of my favorite genres. My opinion, Cube was tense. It certainly beats the pants off some of the crap recommended. At least it tried to be original. You don't have to agree...but you'd be wrong:D
Also, the Ring - I watched it right after my son was born (like week 2) and I saw it in like 15, 5-minute intervals and it still scared the pants off me. Way more tense than most of the crud that has been released in the last 5 years (at least). Horror has got to be one of the hardest genres to write. Everything has already been done (for the most part). That's why stuff like the Blair Witch Project get so huge - there is so little to get excited about.
Slasher flicks where the whole 'story' is killing don't interest me. I only like the kind of Horror movies that have some type of mythological story (even if it's made up) behind them.
I think my favorite would be Wishmaster (I & II).

When I was younger, I thought a couple of the Nightmare on Elm Street movies were pretty well done and scary enough. I haven't watched any of them in a long time, though.
I think the concept of Freddy Krueger was original and fresh for a while - until they beat it to death!!
Army of Darkness
I second that, great movie for Holloween.

Evil Dead 2? How did I forget that one?! Definitely one of the all time best mock horror movies ever! Fantastic with a group and a keg.

I am not saying its the best horror movie ever made, but I felt it had a bit more substance than some of the slasher ones.
The ring was probably the best horror movie I have seen in recent memory (though I have not seen many), very well done that, and then there is Silence of the Lambs which was also very good imo.

I just watched the remake of Amityville Horror and it has some really good "jump out of your seat" and "stay awake at night thinking about it" parts. I wasn't expecting it to be that good.
I'm a big fan of the Ring for pure terror, even though I've seen it a ton, I still get scared everytime.
The orginal Exorcist is really great too, the extended edition has all kinds of "hidden" scary stuff like faces in the shadows and whatnot. its great.

its not a movie, but If you can, look for the real story of Amityville Horror. A documentary of the "true story". It plays around Halloween and totally freaked me out. I think it was on the history channel or A & E or something like that. it may have been Histories Mysteries??? Im not sure but keep an eye out for it.
Exorcist, Event Horizon and The Shining!!!

I'll second even horizon as a really scary movie, also evil dead 2 is a great movie the best scary one of the three. Army of darkness isn't really scary but is a classic.

Here's a third vote for the original Halloween by John Carpenter. Also, 1980's Terror Train with Jamie Lee Curtis .

Evil Dead (all 3) - can't go wrong with a THX horror movie.
Final Destination 2 - The crash scene is great for new teenage drivers
Exorcist (remaster) - An all time classic
Phantasm (all) - can't beat the Tall Man and brain drilling balls
Darkness Falls - nothing like the Tooth Fairy to warp a young mind.
Amityville Horror (old) - GET OUT!!!!!!!!!
Way too many for me to list. I was always partial to the "B" horror movies.
Try Bubba Ho-tep - classic Bruce Cambell

I liked Event Horizon (actually saw that in the theater), but I though it was pretty much just Hellraiser in space. Only a few scenes that were unnerving, like when he's crawling through the duct and the chick with black eyes is there... Not really on my list of good scare movies though.
Phantasm - good catch.
The first few Nightmare on Elm St. flicks were great, but as mentioned (and just like Friday the 13th) they beat those both to death; to the point where they aren't fun anymore. The first Halloween is pretty good too.
For those of you who like The Ring and The Grudge and you haven't checked out the original Japanese versions (both are remakes) "Ringu" and "Ju-On", they're worth checking out too.

Frankenstein with Boris Karloff
Dracula with Bela Lugosi. And don't forget The Warewolf. If you are looking for movies to watch for an All Hallow's Eve bash with kids it's hard to beat the trio of The Exorcist, Poltergeist, and The Omen to really scare kids without too much violence and gore.

I do not know if I would classify it as horror, maybe suspenseful Sci-Fi, but Event Horizon scared me the first time I watched it. Completely alone at home, late at night. Rainy outside. It really set the "mood".:)

The Japanese have traditionally made some excellent horror movies, some based on their folk tales, it is only recently that guys like Sam Raimi have made Hollywood versions of Japanese cult classic horror movies like The Ringu and Ju-On, two of the scariest horror movies to hit the western movie world in recent years. Hopefully there would be more to come, the Ringu itself is a big series and there are many more old and new.

I just saw that on AMC the other day. Very tense, especially for a movie made in 1971. It kept me on edge.
Another personal favorite, though not really scary, is The nightmare before christmas. I always watch it this time of year.
