what are these,how are they defined & what should /are they specifically used for?

All of the commercially available music CDs are Redbook (or at least they're supposed to be- but that's another issue...). Redbook refers to the standardized CD music format developed by Sony and Philips. There are other formats (eg "Orange Book" for CD-Rom, if memory serves), but all the CDs you'd buy at Tower, Best Buy or Amazon are Redbook.

Just to add some interesting triva: standard audio cds are called 'redbook' simply because the specification that describes them was bound in a binder with a red cover. Rob mentioned Orange book already. Bluebook are enhanced CDs. There are others...google for 'redbook cd' and you will likely find pages that list all the formats and their 'book' colors....
