A turntable cartridge requires a phono preamp for equalization and some voltage gain to drive the receiver's line level input. You can ofcourse still try to connect it to a CD/Tape/Aux input. But you won't hear anything that's worth listening.
There are separate phono preamps out there but are almost nill, if not very expensive. Some tube phono preamps also exist in speciality AV stores but could cost more than the equivalent of an entire integrated or receiver. Or you could try the pre-owed stuff. You may want to google search the topic on phono preamp. Just my 2 cents.

Radio Shack and Shure both make inexpensive phono pre amps for this exact purpose and if you are not into extremes, then these two units are well under $100 and would sserve your purpose.
