6 ohm center channel and a new receiver

Brand new rookie with a first time post -- the "rookie" name will be clear when you read my question.

I have a Yamaha NS-AC40X center channel (6 ohms). Just bought a new Pioneer KSX-815 which requires 8-16 ohms (according to what is indicated on the rear panel).

Is is safe to assume that my center channel is no longer useful with this receiver?

No. The quoted impedance is an average - it varies with frequency. The receiver should have no trouble driving it. 4 ohm speakers on the other hand may present a challenge, but even then it will usually be ok if you don't crank the receiver all the way up.

Be sure to check your manual, I have the 1015tx Pioneer, and I know I can select 60ohm speakers in the setup menu, don't know if that is available on the 815, but you should check

.....Christhemac, hey, run the 6 ohm center with gusto....if it makes you feel better, check the amp sections for heat....if a 2 ohm difference on one speaker out of five or seven 8-ohmers makes a difference, your receiver was basement-clearance-priced at $19.95.....all, the speakers being 6 ohm, shouldn't be that much difference either, but if "all" were 4 ohm, sure, you need to come to Audioholics.com and ask questions, haha.....

.....that hour and 1/2 I was at the library, this computer upstairs finally brought up internet explorer.....slower than Heinz Ketchup, for real....and there will be a fistfight over this tower being killed, haha.....

Thanks for the advice. I did check the manual and I can only switch the impedance for all the speakers (ie, toggle b/t 6 or 8 ohms) versus being able to adjust for one speaker alone.

What do you all suggest: set all speakers for 6 or 8? If possible, explain why so that I can learn...but use short words and pop-up pictures! :rolleyes:

I don't think you're going to have a problem either way. I guess strictly speaking you're supposed to switch to 6 ohms. I'd be surprised if thats not written somewhere in the manual in very small type. On my old receiver that had a selector switch between 8 and 4 ohms the manual said to switch the selector to 4 ohms for all speakers even if one speaker was only 6 ohm or less. I couldn't tell the difference between the 8 and 4 ohm setting. My receiver never caught fire, blew up, or even complained and I left it on 8 ohms the whole time.
