DVD setup question

OK, I got my LG LDA-530 set up. I used the RCA connectors for the coaxial digital and video connections. Works great. I just have a question on the setup...


When playing a Dolby Digital DVD, the audio selection on the player says 3/2.1CH. On the status in the receiver it says FORMAT=3/2.1. Now, I could be totally wrong, but shouldn't it say FORMAT 5.1 or something like that?

Same thing. The 3 refers to the front three channels, the 2 refers to the two surround channels, and the .1 refers to the LFE. My new DVD player does the same thing, and it confused me too at first. Wouldn't it just be simpler for it to say "5.1"?

Of course it would be simpler. But simpler and home theater aren't synonymous with each other.

I say the more confusion the better. They should call 7.1 3/2/2.1 or something cool like that. That way nobody would no what the heck was going on. Standards. We need some standards for this hobby!!

... and if you play a DD 2.0 track, like what is most often found on music DVDs, it will say 2/0. If you are playing a CD, it will say PCM 44.1 kHz.

It's just a generic display format: front channels/rear channels/LFE for multi-channel sources or sampling frequency for PCM sources.
