We've just recieved a pair of Gallo Ref 3's in finally only took 4 months. They should be broken in in about 2 more days. We'll see if they can still stand in the light of the raving reviews other stereo mags have put them in. A small eletrostatic tweeter...hmmm.

1. Electro-static tweeter? My memory may be failing, but I thought that the Reference 3 used the CDT tweeter. The CDT tweeter is a piezo-electric transducer, by principle of operation.

2. Based on the appearance of the device, it should have extraordinary polar response behaviour(s). If you have a symmetric placement to walls(for equal reflection times) on both channels and appropriately space the speakers from the walls(>2' from side walls, >3' from back walls), then it should be nice. If the tonal balance is not quite to your liking, please consider a high quality digital equalizer to slightly alter the tonal balance in a precision manner. Compared to the price of the speakers, a high quality DSP E.Q. is chump change(DCX2496 is $250 USD).

At CES 2004 the Gallo Ref was one of the best sounding demos I heard and definitely the best near it's price. They didn't have them playing this year.

About two weeks ago I listened to them at a local dealer. To say I was impressed is an understatement for sure. When the matching center channel is available, this Fall, I will very seriously consider purchasing the Reference 3's and the Reference center.

After listening to a pair at my local dealer, and then bringing them home for a comparison with my Axiom M60s, I bought a pair of Gallo Ref 3s last September. While I lack the "golden ears" of a professional reviewer, I did notice some differences: With the M60s, there was occasional bass bloat that is never heard from the Ref 3s, and the Ref 3s have even better dispersion than the Axioms. So, I brought the demos back to the store and purchased a new pair of Ref 3s, which are now ensconced in the theater with my Axiom VP-150 center, QS8 surrounds and Mirage BP-400 subwoofer. Maybe I am stone deaf, but I detect no mismatched timbre problems. To my ears, they all blend well together.

So, what did I do with the M60s? I relocated them to the living room, where, to my surprise and delight, even though my wife made me place them closer to the front wall than I wanted, and the physical layout of the room required more distance between speakers than I normally prefer, they sound better than ever. They are just plain happy in their new location.

I read about them last year, and talked to people that I respect highly that heard them, everbody had great things to say. In fact, one was a speaker designer/engineer that wanted to buy a pair for his own livingroom, but couldn't bring himself to do it. So, I was looking forward to hearing them at CES 2005, and they weren't playing!!!
