    Default Denon 2809 shutdown

    Hi -

I've had a Denon 2809ci for 2 years now working with a 5.1 system comprised of 5 Jamo in-ceiling mains and surrounds and a 15" Jamo sub with no issues. Just upgraded my L, R and center mains to Definitive BP 8020's and a Mythos 3 center. DirecTV seems to work fine, but when playing "Jurassic Park" on Blu-Ray tonight, the receiver shut down twice. It didnt seem overly hot, but i put a small room fan in front of the receiver and it seemed to be ok. Just has me worried that i've done something in pairing these speakers with this receiver.

Note that i havent yet done any Audyssey setup yet, or even changed the main speaker settings from small to large in the AVR. Could this be causing theissue.

Check you wiring very carefully for whiskers and shorts. That is the first thing to do.

Yes, I mean the speaker wires. All it takes is one stray whisker touching a chassis or the adjacent cable to cause your problem and worse.

Re-did all the speaker wiring. Looked ok, and everything ran ok for a bit but then shut down again. Question - why is this only happening when watchin a BluRay? If it was a short, I should see this anytime im sending sound to the speakers, regardless of source.

I also configured the front speakers to large now from small but have not run Audyssey. Dont see how that should affect the powers situation, though.

BD has much greater dynamic range. It requires much higher peak draws from the system.

Your speakers are rated at 8 ohms, but from what you are saying I bet that is a lie. I bet there must be some impedance drops and phase angles your receiver does not like.

So I think you need to change speakers or your receiver or both.

May be the speakers. Out of curiosity I auditioned some Def Techs at Magnolia last week and everything from that brand got -F grade for audio from me. If anybody can tolerate those, then their audio perception of reality is way off base.

I would use the second connection option in your manual. Connect the speakers via the left and right speaker terminals and the LFE. Speakers large/sub yes.

If you have trouble after that, then change speakers or sub. The other option is t play at a much lower volume.

If your receiver keeps being driven into protection it will soon be toast.

I'd have to agree with TLS on this one - a while ago I auditioned most Magnolia speakers and the only ones decent there the ML speakers

Maybe DefTek makes some good speakers, but Magnolia certainly doesn't carry these

Wow, that's kind of harsh and kind of offensive.

I love the sound of the speakers I have now. Most people think my speakers are sort of decent.

Yet, I thought the sound of the DefTech BP7001SC & BP7000SC sounded fantastic.

Of course, I like the sound of my Salon2, Orion3.2.1, KEF 201/2, & Phil3 speakers better.

But I thought the BP7001 & BP7000 sounded a lot better than the B&W 800D, which you seem to like a lot.

So it's probably a combination of room acoustic, speaker placement, & personal preference.

I don't think anyone's audio perception of reality is way off base. There are just too many variables.

Just like I think those B&W 800D might sound much better in a different room.

The Salon2 & Pioneer TAD might sound like crap in this Magnolia store too.

Not that I'm defending DefTech or anything.

I just don't want to be so absolute and hurt anyone's feelings here.

If the OP loves the sound if his speakers, that is all that matters, right?
