You're actually right; I did switch between Stereo and Direct and didn't hear a difference (with Bass and Treble flat)...

The Onkyo and Marantz are equals in most every way except features and looks. Both manufactures have used the same amp design in these models for more than 10 years.

At least I know Marantz SR4023's amplifier transistors are D2390 /B1560. What transistors used by TX-8555?
